We have the honour of letting the fishing exclusively for over 15 years. The owners, the Barker-Mill Estate have taken the decision to add a further layer of protection to the unique chalk stream salmon population here. In the light of the significant reduction in the recorded chalk stream salmon population, BMT has decided that salmon fishing will be suspended for the foreseeable future.
That said, these historic beats have been shown through ecological surveys to have the widest diversity of fish species as well as the highest density of wild fish species. They lend themselves to excellent mixed-species fly fishing.
The Nursling Little River beat has been held in high regard by renowned chalkstream fishermen for centuries, with the lords of the adjoining manors of Testwood and Nursling Priors disputing the fishing rights as far back as 1387. The walls of the well appointed lodge on the aptly named Drawing Room pool are adorned with fishing photographs and mementos documenting past catches. Nursling has miles of water to explore. Two large mill pools, several hatch pools, groynes, bends, holes and pools give trout and sea trout respite – presenting the angler with plenty of opportunities to outwit their quarry. The Nursling beat fishes a maximum of 2 rods per day.
Nursling ‘Little River’ mixed species fly fishing. Trout, sea trout, bass and other species in season (lower Test). This famous beat offers miles of both tidal and non-tidal water to explore. It flows in the upper section as classic chalk stream and the lower as tidal water. With long riffles, deep pools and runs and some beautiful hatch pools. The beat is served by the Drawing Pool Lodge. With BBQ, WC and a well-equipped kitchenette. Running water and electricity. The perfect beat to target a variety of species on fly. Come prepared with a variety of flies as you can catch trout and sea trout on dries, bass on small streamers and a variety of coarse fish on dries, terrestrials and nymphs. Target a diversity of species in season. Two full time experienced river keepers, Pete Farrow and Charlie Bull manage this extensive fishery. This is one of Howard’s favourite beats. (Fishing for salmon or pike is not allowed).
